It is cold comfort to Alcoa workers that Andrew Hastie has put up a motion, when he is a member of a government that demonises workers, presides over stagnant wages and wants to cut the penalty rates of low paid workers.
 
Andrew Hastie’s motion offers and delivers nothing for Alcoa workers and the wider community.
 
Labor on the other hand has always stood with Alcoa workers and has a long history of working with the community and unions within the aluminium refinery industry in Western Australia.
 
We know that in Western Australia there are currently 1,600 workers in a dispute as the company threatens to terminate their enterprise bargaining agreement.
 
Terminating this agreement will erode the working conditions that have been fought and won over a long period of time.
 
We are very concerned that terminating the agreement will undermine workers’ jobs security, that is why a Shorten Labor Government will stop the unilateral termination of agreements.
 
All that Western Australian Alcoa workers and their families want are secure jobs and fair conditions.
 
We have joined Bill Shorten on the picket line and spent time with the workers who are simply fighting for fair conditions and job security.
 
Andrew Hastie's motion is of cold comfort to Alcoa workers, their families and the local community. Once again the Liberal Government is failing working people.
 
Mr Hastie’s record on workers’ rights and the conditions of working families in his own community includes voting to slash the penalty rates of some of the lowest paid workers in the retail and hospitality sectors and supporting tax cuts for the top of end of town.
